We have stumbled across a flaw in iPhone security that allows third party developers to update and execute arbitrary code from their applications at will, totally circumventing Apple’s App Store approval process. Normally, applications (and all of their updates) have to go through a lengthy review process before they’re posted to the App Store, as Apple combs through them to ensure they don’t do anything malicious or otherwise violate its Terms of Service. This exploit may give developers free rein.

Not exciting, but it’s an interesting post none the less.

Step by Step guide:

Pre-Req: Sync your phone to iTunes and make sure you have a recent backup. The backups can be found under iTunes -> Preferences -> Syncing

  1. Turn off your iPhone.
  2. Hold down the power and home button.
  3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button
  4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.
  5. Download the custom firmware from here

    6. Note: On that link there is a place where you will need to type in 3 letters and click download. You will then have to wait 45 seconds for the download to begin.

  6. In iTunes click Restore while holding the option key if you are on a Mac. If you are on Windows click Restore while holding the SHIFT key. This will allow you to browse for a file. The file you are looking for is the custom firmware you just downloaded.  Select that firmware (.ipsw) and it should begin restoring. After the restore is complete you will ask if you want to set it up as a new iPhone or restore from a backup, chose restore from a backup. Once that is complete you should have 2.0 with it jailbroken and unlocked.
